I started blogging in 2001 as just a way to first connect with my own life and later with others. Back before Google scraped everything, it felt more private that writing in a physical diary that lived in my own house.
My big shift came when I started writing for (2002) and then began managing All Things Girl (2005) when I had the opportunity to simply shine the light on all the wonderful creators out there, giving them a space to share their work. It was such a pleasure to curate and edit wise women! Digital Magazines don't hit the same way now as they did.
As to Substack, it has given me an opportunity to hear the voices of creators again without the noise of social media.... I certainly read more than I write, however, the space is there when I want it to be.
I found you through your writing on your blog and always was inspired by what and how you wrote. I loved reading your reflections on that time — such a different time. I miss the days of logging onto all my favorite bloggers. AND I'm so glad you have a new home for your writing here. I still love reading what you write and how you think and how your kind soul shines through all you do/are. And I'm so very glad we've grown a friendship in real life, too.
Substack truly does have that blogging feel, at least for many of the good ones I remember from back in 2005 when I first started with Blogger. I used it primarily to support my scrapbooking journey with my four kids, then aged 5, 6, 8, and 9 - it housed all of my stories and morphed as I grew. It's so much fun to read your words and follow your creativity. Enjoy your time at Liz's new spot! xoL
It is a THING - trying to archive all of the content we’ve been creating and sharing all these years. I have years of blog entries that I managed to save and I’m still not quite sure what to do with them. It’s overwhelming! And so, so much was lost…which is maybe a good thing. 😂
Most of my content from my first Blogger account was lost when Google shut down the platform. The only ones "saved" became scrapbook layouts. Any subsequent accounts were saved and now sit on my bookshelves in book form and in the cloud as Word documents or .pdf's. Now as I've started on my podcast journey, I'll have to figure out how to "archive" the episodes - as well as the posts on Substack.
This post hit me deep. I remember when I first discovered blogging. What a gift it was to be able to pair my writing with my photos. I had no idea when first starting that a whole new world was opening up to me. Making connections and attending retreats … I began to feel that I wasn't alone in this world. I still have the dream of hosting my own retreat and may need your guide to help me navigate the how. I am loving substack because it does feel like those old blogging days. No pressure…just the ability to show up and share. I don't worry about numbers and stats
.. I am just grateful to have a soft place to land. I am so glad that you are here!
